TYPE:   Renovation

Inspired by the Japanese notion of Wabi Sabi —— the acceptance of ephemerality and imperfection —— Apt. 1 is a house renovation project consisting of a series of soft interventions and a collage of raw materials.

The relatively large bedroom is compartmentalised by a perpendicular placed shelving system, which divides the space into a sleeping area and a walk-in closet. Oriented strand board panels cover the back, adding texture and color to the otherwise serene white room.

Instead of replacing damaged parts of the wallpaper in the living room, removing it altogether revealed an abstract canvas; a visual record of various construction works done by previous tenants. Two custom furniture pieces add functionality to the space; a blackened sideboard serves as the centre piece of the room —— it contains a hidden storage compartment —— and a galvanised steel shelving system with a polycarbonate overhead door which can seamlessly transition between a book-shelve and a work space.
